William D. “Bill” Hecker, age 92, of Marysville, died peacefully Wednesday, March 25, 2020 at Memorial Gables.
He and his late wife, Lorraine, and daughter, Cheryl, formerly owned and operated Hecker’s Shoes on the Marysville city square for 31 years. During his retirement, he was a deli clerk for many years at the Marysville Kroger store. A longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Marysville, Bill served as a church elder, deacon, and trustee and was a past president of the congregation. A 1944 graduate of Grandview High School in Columbus, he was a stand-out athlete and participated in football, basketball and baseball. A veteran of WWII, Bill served in the United States Navy, stationed in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he met and married his wife. Upon his military discharge, he became affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies and signed a four-year contract with the club in 1946. He attended Spencer Business School in New Orleans and Bliss Business College in Columbus. He was a past member of Marysville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 1130. He was a member of Palestine Lodge No. 158 F&AM, Scottish Rite – Valley of Columbus and Aladdin Shrine. He was also a member of Union County Shrine Club. To this day, his family is the proud sponsor of the Hecker Homecoming Trophy, given annually to the MVP of the Marysville Monarch Football Homecoming game. Known for his jovial sense of humor, Bill was a fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Reds. He was an avid golfer and in years’ past, always enjoyed the comradery of friends through a rousing game of cards at Hoy’s pool hall. A dedicated grandfather, Bill and Lorraine were especially delighted of their grandson, Jake, who also pursued the love of baseball. The proud grandparents faithfully attended all of Jake’s sports events. Above all, he will be remembered as a hard-working businessman, community-minded friend and loving family man. He was born April 4, 1927 in Columbus, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert L. Hecker; his mother and stepfather, Rilla C. and Herman Geyer. He was also preceded in death in 2015 by his wife, Lorraine Stevens Hecker; his daughter, Cynthia Hecker Ryder; and his brother-in-law, E. Robert Fichtel. He is survived by his daughter Cheryl (Scott) Waters, of Marysville; his grandson, Jacob William Waters of Dublin; a sister-in-law, Elaine Fichtel of Washington, Georgia; two nephews, Robbie and Dean Fichtel; and many friends. A funeral procession will form at 12:30 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2020 at Underwood Funeral Home for graveside services to be held at 1 p.m. at Oakdale Cemetery. The Rev. Jeffrey A.
