Velma Ruth Stapleton Stewart, age 70, of Columbus, died Monday, November 26, 2018 at Prestige Gardens in Marysville. A woman of “many hats,” she was a former semi-truck driver, a convenience store clerk and operated her own cleaning business. She attended Marysville Free Will Baptist Church. A “free spirit,” she enjoyed crafts and shopping. She was born July 26, 1948 in Stirritt, West Virginia to the late Burl Edward and Margaret Whitted Stapleton. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ashly Mathias and a grandson, Skyler Gilkerson; and many siblings. She is survived by her husband, James L. “Stu” Stewart of Columbus; a son, Rodney (Sherry) Gilkerson of Chandlersville; a daughter, Cindy (Todd Schumacher) Gilkerson Greene of Columbus; four grandchildren, Kelly Greene, Sean Greene, Brandon (Leslie) Gilkerson and Paige Gilkerson; two great-grandchildren, Raina and Jayden; her siblings, Shirley Bocook, Faye (Curt) Higgins, Jackie Mills and Pat Blankenship; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives, including a step-daughter, Tina (Ryan) Long. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Underwood Funeral Home where the family will receive friends beginning at 11 a.m. Pastor Paul Bogenrife will officiate.
