Shirley Marie Wyatt Dowdy, age 81, of Marysville, formerly of Marietta, Ohio, died unexpectedly Sunday, March 7, 2021 at Memorial Hospital in Marysville. A retail salesclerk, she was an former associate of JC Penney and Walmart in Marysville. Born October 28, 1939 in Chillicothe, Ohio, she was raised in Paducah, Kentucky where she attended grade school. She was a member of Souls Harbor Church in Marietta where she and her late husband, Jesse, participated in the AWANA program. A self-taught pianist, she enjoyed playing and singing old gospel hymns. She and her family traveled extensively to follow her husband’s band, “Jesse and the James Gang.” Shirley also enjoyed the music of Michael Jackson and Elvis. Although she never hit a golf ball in her life, she loved watching and keeping up with her favorite professional golfer, Tiger Woods. She also enjoyed watching her daughter play softball and was a big Ohio State football fan. Above all, she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Preceded in death by her parents, Flavious Jaygoe and Audrey Marie Duckett Wyatt, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Jesse W. Dowdy, Jr., whom she married February 18, 1953 (at the age of 13) in Cornith, Mississippi; an infant son; a granddaughter, Sabrina Elain Quinones; and a great-grandson, Hunter Alan Woodford. She is survived by three daughters, Sheela (Paul) Miller of Marietta, Anita Marie (Joby) Woodford of Marysville and Theresa (Shawn) Marshall of St. Marys, West Virginia; her grandchildren, Shannon Strickler, Jay (Tina) Woodford, Josh (Miranda) Woodford, Chuck Kiggans, Kayla (Patrick) Whitaker, Alicia (Derrick) Hardbarger, Jessi Kiggans, Julia (Derick) Marshall and Alec Marshall; her great-grandchildren, Allie, Reagan, Evan, Gracyn, Jalyn (Isaac), Eleisea (Kevin), Savannah (Liz), Spencer, Shayla, Wyatt, Sage, Cam, Trenton, Brett, Morgan, M.J., Bodie and Adaline; her great-great-grandchildren, Pazleigh, Branzon, Nova, Ava and Anslee; a sister-in-law, Helen Russell; her canine companion, “Faith”; and many other relatives and friends, including, a grandson-in-law, Edwardo Quinones and her “Walmart lunch-bunch girls.” The family will receive friends, 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2021 at Underwood Funeral Home, 703 East Fifth Street, Marysville. Graveside services will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, March 13, 2021 in the chapel at East Lawn Memorial Park in Marietta. Memorial contributions may be made to a humane society in your area.
