Ronald Allgauer Mason, 91, of Marysville, formerly of Conneaut, Ohio, died Friday, January 1, 2021 at Bluebird Retirement Community in Marysville. Ron was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was a proud World War II veteran and loved family gatherings, music, crossword puzzles, Civil War history, baseball, playing cards, attending the Memorial Tournament, family sing-alongs, long walks, dogs, camping and fishing. He was known for his sense of humor, warm smile and storytelling.
He was born August 25, 1929 in Preston County, West Virginia to the late Paul C. and Teresa Allgauer Mason. At the age of 16, Ron enlisted in the US Army where he proudly served in post war Japan and played the clarinet in the Army band. In 1948, on leave, he met the love of his life, Kathryn “Kitty” Estelle Demick. He returned home to West Virginia in August of 1949 to work in the mines and attend college. He and Kitty wed on April 14, 1950 in Kingwood, WV.
After Ron received his bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University, he and Kitty moved to Northeast Ohio to raise their four children. This is where he began his successful career in the newspaper industry. In 1954, he started at the Painesville Telegraph as classified advertising salesman. After serving in many positions throughout the years, he retired in 1990 as the publisher for a chain of newspapers in the region.
Even with his impressive work accomplishments, Ron’s children and grandchildren were the source of his greatest pride.
Upon his retirement, Ron and Kitty moved to Marysville to be closer to family and he devoted his time to being “Grandpa Kitty” to his five beloved grandchildren. He gladly attended countless dance recitals, musicals and choir concerts as well as football, soccer, basketball and baseball games. Nothing made Ron smile more than seeing his grandchildren pursue their dreams and he was there to support every single one.
Ron was predeceased by a son, John Robert Mason; his wife of 64 years, Kathryn Mason; and a brother, John Mason. He is survived by three daughters, Cynthia (Bruce Kramer) Mason of Baltimore, MD, Mary Ann (Bill) Minken of Urbana and Judy (Todd) Griffey of Dublin; five grandchildren, Lisa Minken, Katie (Scott) Tourville, Brett Griffey, Sean Mason and Bria Mason; a great granddaughter, Evelynn Tourville; a daughter-in-law, Tracy Tarver of Austin, TX; a brother, William (Constance) Mason of Morehead City, NC; two sisters, Hester (William) Neely of LeVale, MD and Teresa (Les) Campbell of Anderson, SC; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives (several having four legs).
