Phyllis Ferrell

Phyllis Pearl Westlake Ferrell, age 93, of Marysville, died Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Traditions of Deerfield in Loveland, Ohio. A former resident of The Bluebird Retirement Community in Marysville, she moved to the Cincinnati area in July 2021 to be close to family. Phyllis and her late husband, Willard, were residents of Delaware for many years prior to moving to Marysville. She was a 1945 graduate of Taylor Rural High School in Broadway, Ohio where she was a cheerleader and played softball and basketball. She also participated in tap dancing and 4-H. Following graduation, she attended Marion Business College. She worked a short time at First National Bank of Marysville on the town square. A dearly devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, she was recognized in 1980 by Gov. James A. Rhodes as Delaware County “Mother of The Year.” As a mom of a child with Down’s Syndrome, (Philip died in 2004 at the age of 43) she received the above honor for her volunteer service to the mentally and developmentally disabled. A seven-year member of Delaware County Council for Retarded Citizens, she was past-president of the board and co-chairman of the tax levy for construction of the sheltered workshop, Alpha Industries. Phyllis was co-founder in 1969 of Aid Retarded Citizens (ARC) of Delaware County. An avid seamstress, she created many outfits and suits for family members. An avid Ohio State fan, she and her husband enjoyed Lake Erie, Branson, Missouri and traveling to Florida. She will be remembered for her good cooking, storytelling, reminiscences of the past and her dedication to her children and their activities throughout the years. She was born October 25, 1928 in Broadway, Ohio to the late Samuel and Mary Hartshorn Westlake. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Willard Lowell Ferrell; her son, Philip L. Ferrell; her siblings and in-laws, Arthur Westlake, Bud Westlake, George and Phyllis Westlake, Rosemary and Dewey Shirk, Judy Westlake, Carolyn and Ronald Chapman, Rae and Kamma Ferrell, Nola and Chuck Bettice, Earl and Helen Ferrell, Joseph and Nikki Ferrell, Don and Janie Ferrell and Herb and Donna Ferrell; and nephews, Jerry Ferrell, Keith Chapman and Greg Westlake. She is survived by her daughter, Cathy (James) DeNu of Milford, Ohio; her son, Samuel (Deborah) Ferrell of Gainesville, Georgia; her grandchildren, Tiffiny Ferrell of Sacramento, California, Timothy (Lee) Ferrell of Augusta, Georgia, Roman DeNu of Milford, Ohio and Feliz (Bob) Hall of Milford, Ohio; four great-grandchildren, Morgan, Gretchen, Aurelia and Jace; her sister-in-law, Julia Westlake; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends, including longtime friends, Bill and Sally Parrott. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 15, 2022 at Broadway Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Queen City Hospice, 4605 Duke Drive, Suite 220, Mason, Ohio 45040. Underwood Funeral Home is assisting the family.
