E. Peter “Pete” Griffin, age 90, of Marysville, passed away peacefully in hospice on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at Dublin Methodist Hospital with family at his side following a long and valiant fight with pneumonia.
He led a full life, including 39 years altogether in Marysville, Ohio. Pete grew up in Pompton Plains, New Jersey and graduated from the University of Vermont in 1953 with a degree in Agriculture. His college years were followed by marriage to Joan Friendburg, and then military duty as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force stationed at Eglin AFB in Florida, where he and Joan started a family. Upon honorable discharge from the Air Force, he earned his PhD in Agronomy at Rutgers University and soon began a career in agribusiness. Pete, Joan and family lived in Ohio, Maryland, New Jersey and again in Ohio, during which time he traveled to many developing parts of the world for business.
The Griffin family settled in Marysville in 1973 as a result of Pete’s employment with O.M. Scott and Sons, where he eventually became VP of Research and Development.
In 1989, Pete married Betty Brewer and returned to his home state of New Jersey, working with his extended family in their golf course and real estate businesses. In the late 1990’s, Pete and Betty returned to Marysville, re-settling in an architecturally unique home just off Boerger Road that required and received much TLC.
Pete never truly retired until mobility became an issue in the last few years. After returning to Marysville, he happily worked part-time with Pioneer Seeds, in garden store sales and landscape planning with Crago’s and Scheiderer’s, and with Connolly Construction in landscape maintenance. He proudly served for many years on Marysville’s planning commission – participating in the extensive growth of the city – and also served in various capacities with the Milford Center United Methodist Church, where he and Betty were members.
Pete Griffin was a happy man. He loved the natural world – weather, plants, trees, birds and wildlife in general. He was a good neighbor, enjoyed both the quiet life and good conversation, and kept tabs on his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Pete was born February 18, 1931 in Franklin, New Jersey to the late Attmore E. and Carolyn Terwilliger Griffin. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Betty Brewer Griffin. He is survived by his son, Gary (Tamra) Griffin of Hudson, Wisconsin; his daughters, Jane (Dave) Vollrath and Gail (Clay) Moore, both of Marysville; step-children, Catherine Lehman, Patricia (Thomas Lee) Lehman of Cincinnati and Rick (Rhonda) Lehman of Marysville; grandchildren, Amy Griffin (James) Edwards, Peter Griffin, Matthew (Kristin) Vollrath, Ben (Jacey) Vollrath, Jamie (Matthew) Morley, and Abby Moore; step-grandchildren, Brit (Mike) Roberts, Christopher (Betsy) Droege, Monica (Dave) Collett, Michaela (Troy) Hibbard and Tyler (Tiffany) Luchka; many great-grandchildren, with a soon-to-be-born great-grandchild due near his next birthday; his sister, Anne Carter of Berea, Kentucky; his first wife, Joan Griffin of Marysville; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, December 3, 2021 at Underwood Funeral Home, 703 East Fifth Street, Marysville, Ohio 43040 where the family will receive friends beginning at 3:30 p.m. Interment will be held at a later date.
