Patricia Ann “Pat” Crosby DeGroot, age 94, of Marysville, died peacefully Friday, October 1, 2021 at Memorial Hospital in Marysville. A 1948 graduate of the College of Business Administration at Syracuse University, she majored in retailing and was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. Pat was a former associate of Sibley’s Department Store in Rochester, New York, where she served as secretary to the personnel manager. A member of First Presbyterian Church of Marysville since 1966, she sang tenor in the church choir for almost 40 years and was on the church library committee for ten years. Her love of music included playing trumpet at Cohocton High School, Cohocton, New York, and in the marching and concert bands at Syracuse University. She also sang alto in The Rochester Oratorio Society which performed at the Eastman Theater at the Eastman School of Music. As a girl scout, Pat earned 25 merit badges and was also a member of the 4-H Club in Cohocton. She and her husband, Bob, sponsored children through The Christian Children’s Fund and Children, Inc. of Richmond, Virginia for over fifty years. They also established the “Bob and Pat DeGroot Family Scholarship” which annually is awarded to a high school senior. Pat lived with insulin dependent diabetes since 1942. In February 2017, she was presented the Eli Lilly Diabetes Journey Award and received a gold pendant for managing Type I Diabetes for 75 years. She also received a 75-year medal from the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. Pat was born September 26, 1927 in Dansville, New York to the late Thomas J. and Lucille E. Rex Crosby. She was also predeceased by a brother-in-law, Dr. Donald Hoople. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Robert C. DeGroot, whom she married May 11, 1957 at East Avenue Presbyterian Church in Rochester; her sister, Dr. Sally Hoople of Brunswick, Maine; her sister-in-law, Ophelia “Fifi” DeGroot of Asheville, North Carolina; her nieces and nephews, Cathy Hefner, Nancy Hoople, Ann (Joe) Connors, Gretchen DeGroot (Gunny) Green, David (Wanda) Hoople and Doug (Gwen) Hoople; and other relatives and good friends, especially Tim and Sharon Widner Emrick. Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at Underwood Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends beginning at 3 p.m. Rev. Jeffrey A. Schooley will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made in Pat’s memory to First Presbyterian Church of Marysville or the Union County Humane Society.
