Nancy Kittrell

Nancy Elizabeth Blake Kittrell, age 93, of Surf City, North Carolina, formerly of Columbus, Ohio and Richmond, Kentucky, died peacefully Sunday, October 10, 2021 at her home on the Atlantic coastline with her daughter and son at her side. A schoolteacher, she was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, Class of 1949, an Ohio State Buckeyes fan and on October 1, 2020, was bestowed as a “Kentucky Colonel.” At EKU, she was a cheerleader and was proposed to on the football field by the late, love of her life, Harold L. Kittrell, Jr. She grew up in Richmond, Kentucky, where she and her family attended First Christian Church and roller skated with her best young friend, Juanita Whittaker, up and down the sidewalk of Aspen Avenue. She and her husband raised their two children among the best of Kentucky’s offerings, from jaunts to horse farms in Paris and Georgetown, to “My Old Kentucky Home” in Bardstown to the “picture show” in Lexington and travels to Lake Cumberland. She was a most dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and cherished family legacy, family tradition, harbored a deep passion for her alma mater EKU and embraced an enduring Kentuckian pride. She was born October 27, 1927 in Richmond to the late Julian William and Jessamine Douglass Jacobs Blake. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Harold Leslie Kittrell, Jr., whom she married July 30, 1949 at First Christian Church in Richmond, Kentucky. She is survived by her son, Harold William Kittrell and her daughter, Catherine Kittrell, both of Surf City, North Carolina; two granddaughters, Sara Lizbeth (Dustin) Lambries of Illinois and Abigail Leigh (Phil) Granath of Alaska; five great-grandchildren, Ruth, Joel, Lilly, Gage, Rowen and Grayson; her brother-in-law, Charles E. (Helga) Kittrell of Powell, Ohio; and a niece, Kari Lynn (Rick) Poole of Columbus. Private graveside services will be held at Richmond Cemetery in Richmond, Kentucky.
