Michael C. “Santa” McCarty, age 72, of Marysville, died peacefully at his home surrounded by family and friends on Thursday, September 6, 2018. He was born August 1, 1946 in Marysville to the late Bertha Mae McCarty. He was a 1964 graduate of Marysville High School. As a truck driver, he was an associate of Gould Trucking in Sidney, Ohio. A collector of antiques and memorabilia, he loved attending flea markets and auctions, especially with his best friend, the late Bill Endsley. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and participated in many fishing tournaments throughout the years. He was well-known for his portraying of “Santa Claus” every Christmas for 38 years. He loved greeting children of all ages at the Santa Claus house in Marysville and collaborated with Ronnie Schilling’s horse-drawn Santa sleigh for the Marysville Christmas parade. He enjoyed attending the Bristol NASCAR race and liked to build hotrods. He loved riding his Honda Goldwing motorcycle with the love of his life of 22 years, the late Bettie Hastings. They cherished their times traveling together. In addition to his mother, Bertha, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Joann Talbert; his brothers, Larry, Harold and Chucky Bendler; his sisters, Kate Bolenbaugh and Patty Morse; his niece, Dawn Talbert; and his step-children, Michael W. Hastings and Debra Hastings. He is survived by his children, Michael (Kandice) McCarty of Marysville, Diana (Rick) Shreve of Richwood, Tammy (John) Smith of Richwood, Nancy (Marvin) Gargus of Joplin, Missouri and Dorothy Hastings of Marysville; his grandchildren, Levey, Libbie, Leland and Layne McCarty, Josh and Joey Shreve, Pamela, Johnny, Brandon, Laura and William Smith, Michelle Trotter, Keith Gaylord, Kyle Fernside, Robert Spanswick and Brian, Tyler and Susan Edwards; several great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends, including his best buddies, Rez Talbert and Tony Coe. The family will receive friends 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at Underwood Funeral Home where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Pastor Michael Mollett will officiate and burial will be at York Center Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to VFW Post 3320 following burial for food and fellowship.
