Mary Marcene Barkley Stafford, age 95, a resident of The Bluebird in Marysville, died Sunday, November 3, 2019 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. She retired from Akron Children’s Hospital where she served as a medical records clerk for 30 years. Born and raised in Marion, she was a 1942 graduate of Marion Harding High School. Following World War II, she and her new Army husband lived in the Philippines for four years. Upon their relocation and career in Akron, they retired to Marion. Mary was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Marion where she was the church secretary for many years. She enjoyed needlepoint, volunteering at Marion General Hospital and canning relishes, peaches, jams and other homemade goods. She and her husband also travelled extensively throughout the United States and abroad. She liked card games and socializing with her longtime church friends and neighbors, especially at Shiloh Chapel Prime Timers luncheons in Marysville. She was born March 28, 1924 in Marion to the late John and Martha Hettler Barkley. She was also preceded in death on August 1, 1990 by her husband of 41 years, Keith P. Stafford, whom she married February 4, 1949; her siblings, Dorothea, Elmer, Carl, Howard, Ralph, Don, Dick, Helen, Marguerite and Glenn; and a daughter-in-law, Julie Diane Stafford. She is survived by two sons, Gregory (Becky) Stafford of Marysville and Michael (Mariate’) Stafford of Dallas, Texas; her grandchildren, Erin (Daniel) Ottersbach, Elizabeth (Chad) Miller, Jason Stafford and Chris (Sim) Stafford; two great-granddaughters, Lucy Ann and Stella Marie; a sister, Eleanor Jean Hodges; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives. The family will receive friends 9 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at Underwood Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at 1 p.m. at Marion Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh Chapel Prime Timers or Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Condolences may be expressed to the family at underwoodfuneralhome.com.
