Marvin E. Williams, age 85, of Columbus, formerly of Marysville, died Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
A lifelong entrepreneur and business owner, he began his career at the O.M. Scotts Company, then founded “Barefoot Grass,” a residential lawn service that was expanded into 12 cities before being sold to the Toro Company. Marvin also acted as a contractor for nearly a dozen homes built in Marysville in the 1960’s and owed a House of Fabrics franchise in Marion, Ohio. After leaving Toro, Marvin went on to create or own several companies (WickerTree Tennis Club, Marketing Ventures, Executive Gallery, Family Vacation Services and ShadeTree Systems) with five U.S. and international patents and trademarks including Executive ScanCard Systems, SkyValet. and ShadeTree Retractable Canopies.
Marvin also served as a board member for several companies, including Society Bank and the Columbus Zoo where he worked with Jack Hanna and the Columbus Symphony in the 1970’s to create the “Picnic with the Pops” series at the Zoo. (Emceed by Flippo the Clown!)
He was born December 8, 1935, in Columbus to the late Howard M. and Cecil M. Cramer Williams. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Eugene Williams, Eileen Hopkins and Lois Bailey. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Shirley J. Reeley Williams, whom he married May 13, 1956; his children, Derek (Joan) Williams of Delaware, Dean (Sarah) Williams of Walnut Creek, California, Dwayne (Kelli) Williams of Hide Away Hills and Wendy Fairbanks of Delaware; his grandchildren, Allison Williams, Audrey Williams, Nick Williams, Spencer Williams, Victoria Williams, Tyler Williams, McKenzie (Jackie) Gleason, Carly (Evan) Shealy, Edward Fairbanks and Sam Fairbanks; his great-grandchildren, Alice, Sadie, Hannah and Abigail; his sisters-in-law, Thelma Williams, Rachel Monson and Marcella Matlack; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at Underwood Funeral Home where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 9, 2021. Rev. Jay M. Groat will officiate, and burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery. The family requests that Covid precautions be used. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.underwoodfuneralhome.com.
