Madeline Hill Retterer

Madeline Rachel Hill Retterer, age 101, of Marysville, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 13, 2021 at Memorial Hospital in Marysville. An elementary educator for 43 years, she began her teaching career at the age of 19 for the Radnor Public Schools. She taught for Marysville Schools beginning at the New Dover school, then at East Elementary school and finally was on the opening staff at Edgewood Elementary school until her retirement in 1981.  A 1937 graduate and valedictorian of Prospect High School, she played on the Prospect girls’ basketball team where she served as captain her senior year.  She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Bowling Green State University and her master’s degree in education from Ohio Northern University. A member of Delta Kappa Gamma, she also was a member of King’s Daughters, Aletheia Society, the Union County Retired Teachers Association and served on the board of the Union County Historical Society.   Madeline was a longtime member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, where she taught catechism. An avid equestrian, she and her late husband, “Bud,” founded the Arabian Horse Association of Ohio. On their Chestnut Street farm, they enjoyed a whole journey of breeding, training and showing a number of horses, but most especially, their beloved stallion, “Azad.” She will be remembered not only as a “favorite teacher,” but a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved shopping and chocolate. She was born July 3, 1919 in Marion County, Ohio to the late George and Mary Bland Hill. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Warren “Bud” Retterer, whom she married October 20, 1945; her sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ellen “Sis” Hill and Don Griffiths; and two brothers-in-law, Arthur and Harry Retterer. She is survived by her daughter, Suzie Retterer of Marysville; four granddaughters, Rachel (Morgan) Thomas, Sarah (Tony) Settles, Katie (Aaron) Scott and Maggie (Joe) Stroup, all of Marysville; her great-grandchildren, Oliver, Harrison, Samuel, Warren and Elsie; and other relatives, friends and neighbors, including Dick and Rene Retterer, Retta (her late husband, John) Retterer, Karyl and Elizabeth Sabbath, Kimberly, Sally, Justin, Carolyn, Michaela, Cody and Heather Griffiths, Pat Blessing, Ruth Spencer, Nan Sawyer and Dot Dennis. The family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 19, 2021 at Underwood Funeral Home where the Holy Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2021 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. The Rev. Fr. Kevin J. Kavanagh will officiate.  Graveside services will be held following the mass at 12:30 p.m. at Prospect Cemetery in Prospect.  Memorial contributions may be made in Madeline’s memory to the Union County Historical Society.
