Lila S. Dodd, 92, of Marysville, died Thursday, January 12, 2012 at The Inn at Halcyon Village. An independent and strong-minded woman with high standards and expectations, she had sensitivity for students with social and educational needs. A longtime educator, she served as librarian at Marysville Junior High School for many years and was also a former fifth grade teacher at Edgewood Elementary and Milford Center Elementary. Early in her career, she taught in Ft. Wayne and Wadesville, Indiana. She was a 1941 graduate of Indiana University where she received a bachelor’s degree in physical education and minor degrees in music and science. A pianist, she grew up in a family of passionate musicians. During the Great Depression, her family left her birthplace of Youngstown and moved to the family farm in Wadesville, IN. She and her family, the Strauss family musicians, competed at the Indiana State Fair and won top honors. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Marysville where she served as deacon and participated with Presbyterian Women. She was a past president of Aletheia Society and a member of Mary Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. An avid reader, she was a devoted supporter of the Marysville Public Library. She enjoyed golfing and was a former member of Marysville Country Club. She was an accomplished bridge player and participated in many card clubs throughout the years. She also liked solving crossword puzzles. She was born December 4, 1919 in Youngstown to the late William and Edna Allison Strauss and was also predeceased on January 25, 1995 by her husband of 50 years, Ross S. Dodd; two brothers, Captain Allison W. Strauss, US Army Air Corps and Col. Kenneth R. Strauss Ret. USAF; and a son-in-law, David A. Esthus. She is survived by two daughters, Judith D. (David) Green and Nancy C. Esthus, both of Marysville; four grandchildren, Paden (Brett) Green-Tossey of Marysville, Benjamin Esthus of Grandview Heights, Nicholas Esthus of Memphis, TN and Kathryn Esthus and her fiancé, Donte Hamilton, both of Austin, TX; a great-grandson, Paul Tossey; and a sister-in-law, Evon Howard of Mulberry, FL. The family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday January 22 at Underwood Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 23 at First Presbyterian Church of Marysville. Rev. Dr. Scott S. Strohm and Rev. John M. Groat will officiate. Interment will be held at a later date at Oakdale Cemetery.
