Les Yoder, age 88, passed away on November 16, 2020 at Spring Meadows Care Facility. Les lived a rich and full life. He was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania to John and Anna (Stoltzfus) Yoder on July 28, 1932. He lived on his family’s farm until he began service with PAX, an alternative service program focused on post-WWII reconstruction. This took Les to Germany and Austria where he built and rehabilitated houses while learning to speak fluent German.
Les married Margaret Steiner and together they had three children, Bonita Kauffman, Jeff Yoder and Tim Yoder, all of whom have survived him. He is also survived by five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, his sister, Mary Ellen Yoder and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Three brothers and one sister precede him in death.
Following his love for languages, Les studied at Goshen College (Indiana), graduating in 1965 with a B.A. in Spanish. He then taught at schools in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Illinois. He also worked with mentally handicapped students, helped in adult literacy programs and operated a painting business. Les also loved to sing. Throughout his life he was involved with church choirs and several singing groups, including the Akron Hall of Fame Chorus, a barbershop chorus.
Les was a person who would talk with anyone and everyone. He was a friend to all and always looked for ways to help people in need. He also had a natural curiosity that led him to overhauling his cars, building elaborate heat-exchange units and trying to solve problems that looked impossible. Les will be remembered and missed by many. Underwood Funeral Home is assisting the family where condolences may be expressed at www.underwoodfuneralhome.com.
