January 13, 1930 - April 30, 2014
Kathryn Estelle Demick Mason, 84, of Marysville, formerly of Conneaut, Ohio, died Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Memorial Hospital of Union County in Marysville. A homemaker and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, she was fondly known to her family and friends as “Kitty.” She was a lover of desserts, a talented seamstress, a pretty great pogo-stick jumper, a baker extraordinaire and had the patience of a saint.
She was born January 13, 1930 in Kingwood, West Virginia to the late Adolph Leo and Gladys Miller Demick. In 1948, Kitty graduated from Kingwood High School. A year later she met the love of her life, Ronald A. Mason. It was love at first sight. After a brief courtship, the two wed on April 14, 1950 in Kingwood, WV. As Ron pursued a degree, Kitty worked as a telephone operator. Upon Ron’s graduation, Kitty hung up her telephone career to focus on her family. She and Ron soon moved to Northeast Ohio to raise their four children.
In Northeast Ohio Kitty was an active volunteer in the community. She donated her time to her children’s school, Brown Memorial Hospital in Conneaut, was a Girl Scout leader and had one of the best gardens on the block. After his retirement, Ron and Kitty moved to Marysville to be closer to family.
Family was Kitty’s priority and she cherished the time she spent with them. She gave her time and love unconditionally. She sewed hundreds of hems for the shorter members of the family and the Christmas cookies that she baked with the women of the family (a tradition that she started and will continue for many years to come) have delighted the taste buds of thousands in the central Ohio area. She also sang a mean twelfth day of Christmas at the family’s annual Christmas Eve sing-along. Kitty adored her grandchildren (both human and canine). She loved cooking for and baking with her grandkids, especially Snickerdoodles . She was their number one fan. Over her lifetime she attended 678 dance and piano recitals, 294 soccer matches, 482 basketball games, 1776 musical and choir performances 2,834 baseball games and wrapped 923 dog bones (numbers may be slightly exaggerated, but she loved a good story).
Kitty was predeceased in 2012 by a son, John Robert Mason. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Ronald A. Mason; three daughters, Cynthia (Bruce Kramer) Mason of Baltimore, MD, Mary Ann (Bill) Minken of Urbana and Judy (Todd) Griffey of Dublin; five grandchildren, Lisa Minken, Katie (Scott) Tourville, Brett Griffey, Sean Mason and Bria Mason; a daughter-in-law , Tracy Tarver of Austin, TX; a brother, Robert (Vernie) Demick of Rowlesburg, WV; a sister, Dottie (Don) Everly of Kingwood, WV; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives (several being furry with four legs).
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Underwood Funeral Home, 703 East Fifth Street, Marysville, where the family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Marysville Summer Theater Workshop in care of the Union County Foundation or to Mobile Meals at Memorial Hospital of Union County.
