Joy Naomi Groat, age 85, of Marysville, died peacefully Sunday, December 22, 2019 at The Ohio State University Medical Center with her family by her side. She was born March 9, 1934 in Monessen, Pennsylvania to the late Harold Eugene and Naomi Crawford Jones. A proud homemaker, a meticulous bookkeeper and a detailed organizer, she retired in 1994 from serving as Clerk of the Union County, Ohio Commissioners for 17 years. She began her working career in the late 1960’s as the Marysville Welcome Wagon Hostess. She was also a former associate of The Ohio Reformatory for Women and the dental office of William Miefert DDS. Born and raised in Monessen, Pennsylvania, she graduated from Monessen High School and attended Mount Union College where she studied vocal music and met the love of her life, Jack Groat. An accomplished mezzo-soprano, pianist and organist, she incorporated her musical talent in service to her community and her church. The wife of a minister, Joy was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Marysville where she volunteered with the music program in many capacities and was one of the original members of The Presby Thesbys. She served as a piano accompanist with numerous local pit orchestras and stage combos for concerts, fundraisers and musicals, including The Hi-Fever Follies, Marysville Summer Musical Theater and The Windsor Singers. She and her husband loved to dance and enjoyed dining out and socializing with friends and family. She will be most remembered for her deep devotion to her husband and her honesty, loyalty and faithfulness. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother-in-law, James and a sister-in-law, Mary Louise. She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, The Rev. John Mack Groat, whom she married February 21, 1954 at the Methodist Church in Monessen, Pennsylvania; her children, Jeff (Deborah) Groat, Sr., of Marysville, Jay (Vicki) Groat of Westerville and Jill (Robert) Sements of Marysville; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Marc) Fisher, Jeff Groat, Jr., Jacqueline Groat, Jackson Groat, Kellie Jo Naomi (Alajos) Fiel and Heather (Logan) Plumb; her great-grandchildren, Victoria, MacKenzie, Alexsandra, Lindsay and Alajos “AJ”; and nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, December 29, 2019 at Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeffrey A. Schooley and Joy’s son, The Rev. Dr. Jay Marshall Groat, will officiate funeral services 11 a.m. Monday, December 30, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church of Marysville. Interment will follow the service at Oakdale Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the burial at the church in Kennedy Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to the David and Elizabeth Ward Scholarship Fund, in care of the Union County Foundation.
