Jean Hammond

Jean Marie Johnson Hammond, age 93, of Columbus, formerly of Marysville, died peacefully Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Mount Carmel East Hospital.  She retired from Memorial Hospital of Union County where she served for almost 20 years as outpatient clerk. She was honored to have been chosen as one of Memorial Hospital’s “Employee of the Year.” Jean was a faithful member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church where she was involved with choir, the Rosary Altar Society and card club.  During her younger years, she was an accomplished soloist and organist. She and her late husband, Jack, raised their family in Newark, Ohio and moved to Marysville in 1972 for Rockwell International.  A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister and aunt, she will be most remembered for her devotion to her Catholic faith and dedication to her family. She was born September 4, 1927 in Coshocton, Ohio to the late Paul and Marie Hare Johnson.  Jean was also preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, John “Jack” J. Hammond; her son, Terry J. Hammond; her grandson, David Mark Hammond; and her sister, Joan Stilgenbauer. She is survived by her children, Mike Hammond of Lancaster, Mary Jo (Rick) Danver of Columbus, The Rev. Fr. Mark J. Hammond of Mount Vernon, Nancy Warner of Pennsylvania, Jane (Paul) Johnson of Kentucky, John Hammond of Marysville, Peggy (Brad) Cook of Westerville, Cathy Hammond of North Lewisburg and Beth Hammond of Marysville; her grandchildren, Denise, Jennifer, Lindsay, Barbara, Chip, Steve, Scott, Amy, Megan, Sara, Emily, Andy, Eric, Mitch, Andrew, Saul, Jacob, Ben, Donna and Jamie; 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends, including Juanita Rausch. The family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at Underwood Funeral Home.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.  Jean’s son, The Rev. Fr. Mark J. Hammond will officiate.  Interment will follow at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Cemetery.  COVID precautions will be required.  Memorial contributions may be made to her church or to Catholic Charities in care of Catholic Social Services, 197 East Gay Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215.
