Howard Edwards Wentz, III, age 88, passed away into the arms of his loving Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at the home of his daughter, Cindy.
He was born on January 14, 1929 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Howard Edwards and Lillian Jane Purcell Wentz II. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Sally Wentz, and an infant daughter.
Howard lived in the North Columbus and Clintonville areas all of his life. At the age of 12, he studied art as a student of Edwin Bolenbaugh, artist for the covers of outdoor magazines such as Hunter Trader Trapper and Field & Stream. He paid for his art lessons with the money he made on his paper route. As a wildlife and nature artist, he used the medium of oils and painted many canvasses as well as on wood. He could be seen in later years at many local craft shows with his paintings.
He graduated from North High School in 1947. After high school, he worked at Fifth Federal Savings Bank and Jeffrey Manufacturing before he was hired as a sales associate at The Clintonville Electric Company where he worked from 1954 until his retirement as General Manager in 1984 at the age of 55.
He was a member of Calvary Bible Church in Columbus and served as head usher for many years. It was there he accepted Christ as his personal Savior. In 1984 he moved to Cashiers, North Carolina with his wife, his mother and his mother-in-law where he was living his dream in their log home in the mountains and again taking time to return to his lifelong talent of painting. He attended Cashiers Baptist Church where he was baptized and served as an usher and deacon.
In 1995, he returned to Marysville and continued taking care of his wife and “The Mothers”. He attended Berean Bible Church in Dublin. He had many friends at the Windsor Senior Center where he enjoyed having lunch and playing Wii Bowling. He was an avid OSU fan and enjoyed watching the Cavs and Blue Jackets in recent years.
Howard married Martha Hamilton on October 10, 1947 in Columbus, Ohio and she preceded him in death on April 20, 2009. He enjoyed life to the fullest with his daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was excited to find out he will have a new great-grandchild in October 2017.
Howard is survived by two daughters, Cindy (Ron) Rausch-Riegel of Marysville and Karen (John) Boley of Westerville; six grandchildren, Michelle (Mike) Davet, Sarah Jane Crouse, Douglas (Stephanie) Rausch, Jill (Doug) Bayler, Jacqueline (Jeremy) Gainer and John (Mary Katherine) Boley; nine great-grandchildren, Jacob Davet, Madison Davet, Madelyn Crouse, Livia Bayler, Alexa Bayler, Ellie Bayler, Emmie Bayler, Kinley Gainer and Colton Boley; his wife’s cousin, Dan (Pat) Coffman; and his canine companion, Sonny.
The family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday April 25, 2017 at Underwood Funeral Home in Marysville. A Celebration of Life service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Berean Bible Church, 7541 Dublin Road, Dublin. Graveside services will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Oakdale Cemetery in Marysville.
