Homer Viers

Homer Ray Viers, age 96, of Marysville, died peacefully Sunday, June 19, 2022 at his home with his family by his side. A career banker, he retired in 1991 from Richwood Banking Company where he served as vice-president. Following his retirement, he continued his relationship with the bank as a board member. Prior to his tenure with Richwood Bank, he was associated with BancOhio, the former First National Bank of Marysville, where he began his career. He was a 1943 graduate of Orange High School in Delaware County where he played baseball and basketball. He started coaching little league baseball when his son, “Donnie,” was a youngster. He continued coaching and umpiring for many years in the Union County area. A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he served during World War II in the Pacific Theater as a radio operator. He was a participant on Honor Flight. A lover of animals, especially his Dachshunds and cats, Homer was a longtime collector of antiques and memorabilia. He started his passion with collecting as a clerk for Dick Pfarr auctioneering. A member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 1130, Homer was lovingly known as a man of integrity, honesty and loyalty. In most recent years, he maintained a busy lifestyle which included morning coffee gatherings with good friends, attending countless garage sales, flea markets and festivals and tending to his consignment booth. He will be remembered by many for his eagerness to help with their very first banking loans. Above all, he was a deeply devoted family man and tirelessly followed his children and grandchildren in their athletic and extra-curricular endeavors. He was born December 10, 1925 in Delaware, Ohio to the late Elsie and Clara Davis Viers. He was also preceded in death in 1998 by his wife, Floretta Oberle Viers; his daughters, Joyce Viers Segner in 2009, Jo Ann “Jody” Viers Anderson-Schuette in 2015 and Janice E. “Jan” Viers Glassburn in 2017; his siblings, Jack Viers, Stella Mann, Jim Viers and Don Viers; and a nephew, David Viers. He is survived by his son, Don (Diane) Viers of Marysville; his grandchildren, Jason (Brandy) Segner, Jennifer (Brent) Maxwell, Jeremy (Kim) Segner, Joel (Ally) Glassburn, Buffi (Keith) Novotney, Jeff Anderson, Jared (Meredith) Anderson, Conner (Megan) Viers, Sarah (Brian) Bond and Mary (Jason) Bond; his great-grandchildren, Brice, Kylee, Karlee, Jackson, Bella, Maya, Oliver, Rileigh, Jake, Ashley, Ryan, Aaliyah, Brooklyn and Luke; his great-great-grandchildren, Dallas, Michael and Daisy; three sons-in-law, Jerry Segner, Bruce Schuette and Roger Glassburn; a sister-in-law, Mary Kay O’Brien; and many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a longtime friend, Lew Stern. The family will receive friends 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 26, 2022 at Underwood Funeral Home where an Elks tribute will follow the visitation. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home 11 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2022. Interment will follow the service at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Union County Military Funeral Honor Guard.
