Gladys Ruhlig Marl

Gladys Louise Ruhlig Marl, age 100, a resident of Walnut Crossing Assisted Living in Marysville, Ohio, went to her Heavenly Home on Friday, May 6, 2022 surrounded by her family. She grew up in Taylor, Michigan, raising five children and lived there until the death of her husband, Robert, when she relocated to Westland, Michigan. During her teen years, she was the star pitcher for the Lambert Pfeiffer Girls’ Fast Pitch team of Allen Park, Michigan, winning twenty-five consecutive games. During WWII, she worked for the war effort as a laborer at aviation factories in Wayne and Ecorse, Michigan. She was a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Taylor, Michigan where she was baptized, confirmed her faith and married, and a former member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Westland, Michigan. Gladys was a member of the Ladies’ Aid, the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and was active with the church school parent/teacher league. While residing in Michigan, she participated with the Westland Seniors, winning a gold medal in the speed walking competition of the senior Olympics. As the years progressed, she traveled extensively. Gladys visited all fifty states, England, France, Canada, The Caribbean, Mexico and Iceland. For thirty years she was a “snowbird” at Sun & Fun Resort in Sarasota, Florida, where she enjoyed golfing. She also enjoyed fishing and gardening and following the University of Michigan football. For the last ten years, she was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marysville, Ohio. Gladys was born at home on August 12, 1921 in Wyandotte, Michigan to the late Martin and Clara Kolleweher Ruhlig and was also predeceased by her husband of 32 years, Robert Richard Marl; her siblings, Elmer Ruhlig, George Ruhlig and Doris Ruhlig; and a son-in-law, James McConville. She is survived by her children, Linda (Daniel) McConville-Gregg of Ft. Myers, Florida, RuthAnn (Raymond) Geiger of Marysville, Richard (Lori) Marl of Williamsburg, Michigan, Audrey (Stephen) Erickson of North Lewisburg and Alan (Carol) Marl of Munith, Michigan; grandchildren, Jamie (Todd) Perkins-Bilovus, Kathleen (Ben) Golay, Jodi (Rob) Lamp, Jeffrey (Jill) Geiger, David (Lina) Marl, Daniel (Marybeth) Marl, Thomas Marl, Kevin (Stephanie) Erickson and Andrew (Heather) Erickson; 19 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church where the family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. Rev. Jacob D. Heino will officiate. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, May 12, 2022 at the pavilion of Michigan Memorial Park in Flat Rock, Michigan where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
