Gary E. Sitz

August 29, 2022

Gary E. Sitz, age 80, of Marysville, died unexpectedly Monday, August 29, 2022 in the emergency room at Memorial Hospital in Marysville following a short, but difficult bout with cancer. Throughout his fight, he never lost hope or his smile. Born and raised in Marion, North Dakota, Gary graduated from Marion High School in 1960. He graduated in 1965 from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. A veteran of the United States Army, he began his career in 1967 with ADM Chemical Company in Minneapolis as a laboratory chemist. In 1971, he continued his career with Ashland Chemical Company in Dublin, Ohio. He retired from Degussa as a senior research chemist in 2003 after 35 years in his profession. During his retirement, he worked for the Marysville school system as a substitute teacher, and later as a line service worker at the Union County Airport. He enjoyed ten fulfilling years and many long days around airplanes and pilots. A childhood love of airplanes and flying finally lead to flight lessons and earning a private pilot’s license where he loved flying to airports in Ohio for breakfast or lunch with family and friends. He participated with the Tuesday men’s golf league at Marysville and Blues Creek golf courses. He also liked camping and hiking, especially in the National Park System. He and his wife enjoyed many years of country line dancing. Gary took many trips back to North Dakota to hunt pheasants and white-tailed deer (AND got to visit with his mother and brothers). He will be mostly remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He was born June 3, 1942 in Marion, North Dakota to the late Paul W. and Marjorie Smith Sitz. He was also preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Nancy Sitz. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Carol Timmons Sitz, whom he married June 1, 1984 in Columbus; his children, Lisa (Rick) Simpson and Scott (Michelle) Callahan, both of Marysville; his grandchildren, Codi (Nathan) Simpson and Riley (Jade) Simpson; a great-grandson, Landon; his brothers, Glen Sitz and Neil Sitz; a sister, Sandy (Dick) Baumgartner; and many other relatives. The family will receive friends 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, September 2, 2022 at Underwood Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
