Florence Nicol Watkins

October 26, 2019

Florence M. Nicol Watkins, age 99, of Marysville, died peacefully Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Memorial Hospital of Union County. She and her late husband, Shade, raised their family and began their farming career in Dover Township during the 1940’s. They established their Darby Township farm in 1954 where she continued to live until her death. She found great joy in her flower gardening and spending time with her family on the farm. Florence was a life member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church where she was baptized June 6, 1920 by Pastor Kuechle and confirmed her faith on March 25, 1934 by Pastor Gerken. She was active with the Ladies Aid Society, the quilters group, Sunday school, Sunday lunch bunch and The Golden Eagles. She exemplified her faith throughout her life through church, volunteerism and hard work. Although her biggest regret was not becoming a nurse, she lived her dream of caregiving in many ways. During the 1960’s, she was instrumental in helping develop the Union County Health Department baby wellness program. She was also a champion of the “Vial of Life” program. A member of RVICS – Retired Volunteers in Christ’s Service, she was a volunteer for Memorial Hospital where she accrued over 1900 hours. A Morey Center volunteer desk clerk, she and her husband also delivered mobile meals since 1982. Florence was a member of Windsor and Community Seniors and the Windsor Singers. She and Shade wintered for many years in Frostproof, Florida where they were involved with the horseshoe-pitching club and the quilter’s group. They were named 2009 Outstanding Senior Leaders by the Union County Chamber of Commerce. She will be remembered for her commitment to her Lord, her devotion to her family and friends and her encouraging smile. She was born May 26, 1920 in Union County to the late Lewis and Anna Fladt Nicol. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Shade P. Watkins, whom she married September 7, 1941 at St. John’s Lutheran Church by Pastor Gerken; a son, Gary Watkins; her siblings, Harold Nicol, Willard Nicol, Luther Nicol; her in-laws, Betty Nicol, Alice Nicol and Gertrude Nicol, Don and Gertrude Watkins, Kathleen and Earl Warren, Ben Elsom, Ed Eger, Walter Burger and Floyd Belt. The family will receive friends 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at Underwood Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Thursday at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Rev. Jacob D. Heino will officiate and burial will be beside her husband at the church cemetery.
