Edmund Paul Thomas, age 84, formerly of Nashville, Ohio, passed away Friday, February 15, 2019 at Carriage Court Assisted Living in Marysville, Ohio. The former science teacher and head of the science department at West Holmes High School in Millersburg, Ohio, he retired in 1993 after 31 years in education. During his tenure at West Holmes, he also helped coordinate the science club and oversee the selection and presentation of local academic and college scholarships. He was a graduate of Canton McKinley High School, received a bachelor’s degree of science and botany from Muskingum College, followed by a master’s degree in education from Miami University. Prior to teaching, he worked as a USDA plant quarantine officer for the port of Detroit. Edmund volunteered actively within Holmes County and the surrounding areas, and helped organize and manage the local genealogy society, gave time to the OARDC in Wooster and the arboretum at Mansfield Kingwood Center, and worked with herbal enthusiasts from the area. In addition, he maintained his connection to teaching through involvement in the local and state Ohio Retired Teachers Association. After his retirement to the farm he shared with his brother, Edmund traveled to Wales on an archaeological trip and to research the Thomas family ancestry.
Edmund was born January 1, 1935 in Bowerston, Ohio to the late Edmund Owen and Edith Kay Dootz Thomas. He is survived by his children, Sheryl (Rick) Hobbs of Colorado, Deborah (Tim) Thomas of Norwalk, Karen (Larry) Young of Marysville, Wendy (Curtis) Fritz of Texas, Jeff (Laura) Thomas of Colorado, E. Alan Thomas of Aurora, Ohio, and Eric (Julie) Thomas of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; their mother, Elaine Mertz; his grandchildren, Meghan (Mike) Hill, Kelsey (Shane) Weaver, Katie (Bryan) Hill, Sarah Thomas, Timothy Thomas, Cody (Kelsey) Sigrist, Alexis Fritz, Maxwell Fritz, Morghan Fritz, Tanner Thomas, Loghan Thomas, Chloe Thomas, Cameron Thomas and Gavin Thomas; two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Calin; his sister, Pat (Ernie) Ware of Canton; his brothers, Don (Rhonda) Thomas of Nashville and William Thomas of Wooster; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends, and innumerable former students.
Please join family and friends for a Memorial Celebration Service at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2019 in the West Holmes Middle School Theater, 10901 State Route 39, Millersburg. A reception will follow the ceremony where Edmund’s favorite dessert, pie and tea, will be served attendees.
