John R. Evans, M.D. age 86, of Marysville, died peacefully early Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at his home. For 47 years, spanning 1965 to 2012, Dr. Evans treated generations of patients in Marysville and surrounding counties and provided wisdom and counsel to Memorial Hospital of Union County. A lifelong resident, friend, respected clinician and an accomplished administrator, he devoted his career to the hospital, his patients and their families. He served as the hospital’s Chief of Staff, Chief of Medicine and Medical Director. He was also instrumental in developing the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He received a bachelor’s degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and his medical degree from The Ohio State University where he served his internship and residency. A veteran of the United States Air Force, he served from 1962 to 64 and was Chief of Cancer Chemotherapy at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Other appointments included Student Services Medical Director at Central State University in Xenia, Medical Director at the Ohio Reformatory for Women, Medical Director for O. M. Scott and Sons and Assistant Medical Director of ITT. His professional memberships and honors included American College of Physicians, American Society of Internal Medicine, American Academy of Medical Directors, Ohio State Medical Society, Outstanding Alumni at OSU College of Medicine and President of the Union County Medical Society. He was a 1951 graduate of Marysville High School where he lettered in football, basketball and track. During his senior year he played golf and was named All-Mid State in football and basketball. In 2010, he was inducted in the Marysville High School Athletic Hall of Fame. During his medical career, he served as the MHS football team physician for many years. Among his golf memberships in Ohio and Naples, Florida, he was a charter member of Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin and was named the club’s captain for 2016. During the 1970’s, he and his family raised and showed Paint horses. He was a past-president of the Ohio Paint Horse Club for many years. Most recently, he served on the Marysville Journal-Tribune Readership Advisory Board. Above all, he was a deeply devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was born August 11, 1933 in Marysville to the late Helen Whitten and John Clyde Evans. He was also preceded in death by two young sisters, Gina and Marian Louise. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lorry Lentz Evans, whom he married April 5, 1986 in Delaware, Ohio; his children, Laura (Joshua) Simmons of Delphos, John (Donna) Evans, II of Columbus, Jill Johnson of Marysville and Kelly Kramer of Marysville; his grandchildren, Jacob Evans Simmons, Kayla (Michael) Bell, Alex Johnson, Kristin Johnson, Cameron Kramer, Carly Kramer, Samantha (David) Leininger and Jordan Simmons; and two great-granddaughters, Saylor and Naomi. To celebrate his life, the family will receive friends 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, August 25, 2019 at Underwood Funeral Home. A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Marysville High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
