Charles Ray “Chuck” Sanders, age 92, of Urbana, died Monday, April 25, 2022 at The Bluebird Retirement Community in Marysville. Born October 14, 1929, in Mt. Sterling, Ohio, Chuck was a 1947 graduate of Urbana High School. He was employed by Urbana Implement Company until he joined the Air Force, where he served as a flight mechanic gaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He spent most of his time stationed in Germany and traveling all over the world from there. Upon leaving the Air Force, he went to work for International Harvester serving first as a trainer then later as a manager in various dealerships throughout the east and Midwest. He finally settled in Urbana purchasing his own International Harvester dealership and was the owner of Sanders Sales and Service for 33 years. Designated an “XL” dealer by International Harvester, he continually received top recognition for outstanding sales and service within the company. Because of his deep dedication to his employees and customers through the years, his legacy continues in the Urbana community to this day.
In his spare time, Chuck enjoyed boating, water skiing, traveling, and woodworking. His greatest joy was his family and most of his favorite memories were of time spent with them, especially at the cottage at Indian Lake. He will be remembered for his integrity, honesty, problem-solving skills, and willingness to help others. Above all, he was dedicated to his Lord Jesus Christ. Chuck was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Urbana for over 50 years. He was a member of Rotary International for many years. He served on the school boards for both the Urbana City Schools and Urbana University, as well as serving on the Dealer Council for International Harvester.
He was preceded in death by his parents, P.W. “Jake” and Faye Ann Neff Sanders, as well as his son, Jeffrey Charles Sanders and brother, Donald Lee Sanders. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Beatrice Louise Castle Sanders, whom he married June 17, 1956 at First Baptist Church in Urbana; his daughter, Kimberly (Phillip) Schaeffer of Marysville; his grandchildren, Jake Schaeffer, Becca (Eric) Runyan, Mickie (Caleb) Ledford, Gabe Schaeffer, Mary Rose (Kyle) Willis, A.J. (Jamie) Sanders and Bishop (Jenelle) Sanders; his great-granddaughters, Madalynn, Charlie and Quinn; his daughter-in-law, Lisa Sanders of Urbana; his brother, Richard (Elizabeth) Sanders of Missouri; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 12-2 p.m. on Monday, May 2, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Urbana, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Brian Wonn will officiate the ceremony. Private interment will be held at Highland Memorial Park in West Liberty. Memorial contributions may be made in Chuck’s memory to Viaquest Hospice or Sycamore House Pregnancy and Family Life Center of Champaign County.
