Catherine Mae Shields Keller, 83, of Marysville, formerly of the Hilltop in Columbus, died unexpectedly Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Memorial Hospital in Marysville. A graduate of Mount Carmel School of Nursing, she retired in 1991 after a 40-year career. In addition to her hospital and nursing home service, her passion and joy came from private duobit phototy nursing. She was a member of the Marysville Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She was also a former member of Brookshire Methodist Church in Columbus. In her church life, she found incredible fulfillment in working with youth, family history and women’s auxiliary groups. An avid genealogist, she was a pioneer in family history research, not only for her own ancestors, but for many families in the central Ohio area. She enjoyed gardening, Big Band music, classic movies and taking trips with her family. A deeply devoted wife of Jack for 63 years, her life was illuminated by her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She cherished family dinners and gatherings. To all who knew her, she was a constant encourager and a fierce protector. As the loving matriarch of the Keller family, she will be most remembered for her giving hands. She was born May 17, 1931 in Selfridge Field, Mt. Clemens, Michigan to the late Lt. Col. George Charles Shields, Jr., and Mae Christine DeLorme Shields. She was also preceded in death by her eldest son, Jack “Scott” Keller; grandson, Kenton Scott Keller; two brothers, George and Lt. Col. Richard Shields; and a sister-in-law, Janet Elleman. She is survived by her husband, Jack Wilson Keller, whom she married February 2, 1952 at Bexley United Methodist Church; her children, Steven Guy (Marjorie) Keller of Galloway, Diane Christine (Kelly) Hebdon of Harrisonburg, VA, Kenneth Shields (Michele) Keller of Plain City and Elizabeth Catherine (Michael) Hauser of Lakewood; fourteen grandchildren, Jason (Stephanie) Keller, Traci (Jeff) Harris, Kevin (Lisa) Keller, Ryan (Karie) Cox, Matt Cox, Andrew (Stephanie) Hebdon, Michelle (Andrew) Pieracini, Laurie (Nathan) Kelly, Jessica (Ammon) Piatt, Megan (Brock) Dehlin, Joshua Hebdon, Ian Keller, Nathan Keller, Michael Hauser; daughter-in-law, Colleen Smith; 19 great-grandchildren, Jack, Joe, Hunter, Rhys, Finn, Liam, Caroline, Kimmi, Alli, David, James, Toby, Tate, Troy, Evie, Landon, Avery, Noah, Griffin; her sister, Christine Louise Shields of Westerville; sisters-in-law, Dell Shields and Virginia Ellis; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Underwood Funeral Home, 703 E. Fifth St., Marysville. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 740 West Third Street, Marysville. Bishop Brent Hiltscher will officiate.
