Carolyn "Sue" Lowery

Carolyn “Sue” Wingfield Lowery, age 73, of Marysville, died Monday, October 8, 2018 surrounded by her loved ones at The Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital following a battle with cancer. She was a loving wife of 51 years, a devoted mother of four children, a dedicated grandmother of ten and a passionate teacher of thousands. An educator for over 35 years, she taught in Columbus Public Schools, at Ft. Clayton US Army base in Panama, at Raymond Elementary, Trinity Lutheran and at Marysville and Fairbanks Middle Schools. Even in her retirement, she was unable to stay out of the classroom as she was a substitute for five years. Upon her husband Joe’s retirement, they traveled the United States for llama shows and sales and also liked traveling to watch their bucking bull at professional bull riding events. She loved her animals, especially her Chincoteague ponies. The Lowery’s enjoyed trips to Chincoteague, Virginia to watch the wild ponies. Aside from her devotion to her animals, she adored her grandkids and was known for her “grandma brags” and grandma smiles. Raised in Milford Center, she was a 1963 graduate and valedictorian of Fairbanks High School and received a bachelor’s degree in education from The Ohio State University and a master’s degree in education from Wright State University. Since childhood, she was involved in 4-H and organized the Double H 4-Hers with which she and her husband served for many years as advisors. With her passion for raising llamas, she enjoyed spinning wool and knitting many woolen articles throughout the years. Her compassionate heart, keen mind and relentless energy allowed others to become her friend wherever she went. She was born June 2, 1945 in Delaware, Ohio to the late Charles and Helen Stanley Wingfield. She was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Jerry Ryan. She is survived by her husband, Joseph D. Lowery, whom she married May 28, 1967 at Milford Center United Methodist Church; her children, Dan (Trina) Lowery of Marengo, Nikki (Scott) Widmor of Xenia, Bryan (Jackie) Lowery of Urbana, Maryland and Barbara (Bob) Hagaa of Mason; ten grandchildren, Amara, Jada, Logan, Kiera, Charles, Camryn, Maddie, Brianne, Ethan and Alex; her sisters, Mary Lou Ryan and Joan (Ron) Tillinger; her brother, Charles (Shirley) Wingfield; her brothers-in-law, Jim (Kathy) Lowery and Jerry (Terry) Lowery; an aunt, Carolyn Stanley; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Underwood Funeral Home where the family will receive friends beginning at 2 p.m. Rev. Kathy Reiff will officiate. Interment will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Union County Humane Society or to Marysville Public Library childrens’ summer reading program.
