Bill Symbolik

William Stephen “Bill” Symbolik, P.E., age 87 of Marysville, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 4, 2019 with family and friends at his side.
He graduated from Struthers High School in 1950, earned a bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a major in Chemical Engineering from Youngstown College in 1959 (now Youngstown State University), and obtained his Professional Chemical Engineer license in 1969. Bill was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1950 to 1954 on board the USS Coral Sea and later in Security Police at Patuxent Naval Air Test Center.
He retired as senior development engineer after 33 years at Westreco, Inc., a subsidiary of Nestle SA. He was instrumental in the development of methods for the continuous freeze-drying process of coffee concentrate resulting in production of Tasters Choice, the design of commercial oil decaffeination processes and additional technical services. He also held several patents.
Among his hobbies, Bill was a small aircraft pilot. He also enjoyed music, playing golf and bridge. Bill had a continuous thirst for knowledge and often studied well into the night. He loved and wished only the best for his family.
Bill was born November 4, 1931, in Struthers, Ohio, the eldest son of the late Stephen and Anna Cecelia Kernyat Symbolik. He was preceded in death in 2007 by his wife of 52 years, the former Betty May Jacobson, R.N.; youngest brother Michael James Symbolik; and son-in-law Steven Carl Sneider. Bill leaves behind five children, William S. Symbolik II of Columbus, Ohio, Lorraine (Steve) Adams of Upper Arlington, Ohio, Marcia (Bruce) Burkett of Williamsburg, Virginia, Deanne Symbolik Sneider of Windsor, Wisconsin and Nancy (Kelly Smith) Symbolik of Lancaster, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Caroline Adams (Jeffrey) Criswell, Alyssa Adams (Seth) Ritchie, Victoria Grace Adams, Sarah (Raynor Guzy) Burkett, Scott Burkett, Will Sneider and Shea Sneider; two brothers, Stephen “Bud” (Jean) Symbolik and Thomas Symbolik, both of Austintown, Ohio; three great-grandchildren, RJ and Bette Criswell and Judah Ritchie; many nieces and nephews and friends, including his dear neighbors, John and Nancy Howard and family.
Friends may call between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2019, at Underwood Funeral Home. Interment with full military honors will be held prior to the visitation at 10:30 a.m. at Oakdale Cemetery. Pastor Luke Ahrens will officiate.
The family would like to thank the staffs of Union County Senior Services and Loving Care Hospice who assisted in his care. In lieu of flowers, Bill requested that donations be made to a dog rescue organization of your choice, The American Cancer Society or Loving Care Hospice.
