Bette Kandel Pfarr McQuown, age 91, of Marysville, died Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Born and raised on the Kandel family farm on County Home Road, Bette was a life member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was baptized November 18, 1928 and confirmed her faith in April 1943. She also participated in the church’s Senior Christ Care and many other projects and groups. Lovingly known as “Doodles,” she entertained, encouraged and uplifted hundreds of lives throughout her life with her colorful costumes, varied impersonations, customized props and knee-slapping music, all founded upon her deep Christian faith. Doodles’ smile, charm and wit were the hallmarks of living out Jesus’ love. Her most common salutation was “Jesus loves you and so do I!” Bette attended Marysville High School and during her early years, worked at The Dinner Bell Restaurant, O.M. Scott and Sons and Carney’s Five and Dime. She was a member of Windsor and Community Seniors, Community and Seasoned Citizens and The Red Hat Society. Aside from donning her collection of hats, she loved line dancing, karaoke, gardening, playing Bingo, capturing special moments on camera and video and being with family and friends. She also enjoyed participating in many fundraisers and community productions, especially Hi-Fever Follies and Fall Frolics. A big Ohio State Buckeyes fan, she will be most remembered for her kind heart, booming voice and her joyful and triumphant attitude. Not surprisingly, she went home to be with her Lord on “National Kindness Day.” She was born October 4, 1928 in Marysville to the late Fred and Emma Kasper Kandel. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Robert E. Pfarr and Donald “Jack” McQuown; her siblings, Christine Uhle, Lutrelle Kandel, Carroll “Boney” Kandel and Leroy Kandel. She is survived by her son, Mike Pfarr of Springfield; two step-sons, Don and Jim McQuown; three grandchildren, Joe (Tiff) Pfarr, Jamy (Julie) Pfarr and Angie (Rob) Thirkield; seven great-grandchildren, Kyle, Austin, Makala, Ashley, Sierra, Zach and Morgan; a sister-in-law, Nancy Pfarr; brothers-in-law, Ray Van Horn and Lonnie Scheiderer; and many nieces and nephews, including special nieces, Kathy
Elberfeld Shamblin and Pam Cline Hitchcock; and other relatives and friends, including a “special daughter,” Rhonda Pfarr Musgrave. The family will receive friends 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, November 17, 2019 at Underwood Funeral Home. A funeral service celebrating her life will be 11 a.m. Monday, November 18, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Rev. Beth Clothier will officiate and interment will be at Oakdale Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.underwoodfuneralhome.com.
