Bertha E. Kandel Scheiderer, 98, a lifelong resident of Union County, died Thursday, February 23, 2012 at The Inn at Halcyon Village. She retired from The Nestle Company where she was an associate for 25 years. During her younger years, she was a server at the Frost Top Rootbeer Drive In and the Dinner Bell Restaurant. A member of St.John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was a former member of the choir, the Ladies Aid and the quilting group. She was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was born again by water and the Spirit in Holy Baptism under the ministry of D. P. Ebert and where she publicly confessed her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and declared her commitment to the Lord’s Church when she was confirmed on May 6, 1928 by Rev. A. W. Zell. She was also a Sunday school teacher at Trinity and as a child, attended Trinity grade school. A dedicated community volunteer, she was a member of Windsor and Community Seniors where she sang with the Windsor Singers for many years. She was a member of Memorial Hospital of Union County Auxiliary, Twig 1 and volunteered at the hospital’s gift shop for over 35 years. Since 1976, she accrued 8052 volunteer hours with the hospital. In 2009 she was awarded the year’s “Most Cherished Volunteer.” She was a member of Union County Farm Bureau and enjoyed participating with the Jolly Dozen card group. She liked handicrafts and made many quilts throughout the years. She was born July 11, 1913 in Darby Township, Unionville Center to the late George and Laura Blumenschein Kandel and was also predeceased by her husband of 28 years, Chester J.Scheiderer, whom she married April 9, 1939 at Trinity Lutheran Church by Rev. E. J. Goedeking; four sisters, Ruth, Lillian, Martha, Marguerite; three brothers, Ralph, Herbert, Arthur; and a son-in-law, Ronald Chapman. She is survived by three children, Stephen (Celia) Scheiderer of Zanesfield, Dennis H. (Karen) Scheiderer of Marysville and Joette E. Chapman of Urbana; five grandchildren, Stephanie “Rene” Scheiderer, Denise R. (Greg) Yutzy, Justin (Beth) Chapman, Seth (Theodora) Chapman and Gabriel Chapman; five great-grandchildren, Zachary, Taylor, Kasey, Logan and Stills; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Kandel and Elsie Kandel; a brother-in-law, Harry Gase; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, where the family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. Rev. John W. Fair will officiate and burial will be at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. John’s Church boiler fund and Odyssey Hospice.
