Alice Douglass Mathers, age 81, of Marysville, died Thursday, December 11, 2014 at OhioHealth Hospice Kobacker House. A teacher all of her life, she taught elementary education at Watkins Elementary in the Fairbanks school district. As a member of Marysville First United Methodist Church, she also taught Sunday school for several years. She was a member of Union County Retired Teachers Association, a former member of Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and a past member of Mary Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. A true “teacher of life,” she exemplified genuineness and was known for her loving and caring heart and her wit and sense of humor. She will be remembered for being blessed with many students and wonderful family and friends. She was born June 4, 1933 in Columbus. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles B. Dodge; a brother, Charles A. Dodge; and her husbands, James E. Douglass and Claude E. Mathers. She is survived by her mother, Audrey Johnson Dodge of Palatka, FL; her children, Harold (Michelle) Douglass of Columbus and Donna (Tom) Stumbaugh of Ostrander; her granddaughter, Audrey Douglass; a step-daughter, Pat Green of Marysville; her brother, David (Ann) Dodge of Palatka, FL; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Dodge of Orlando, FL; a brother-in-law, Harold (Dorothy) Douglass of Port Clinton; a niece, Beth Ann Harrison; a nephew David (Soni) Douglass; and many other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Underwood Funeral Home, Marysville where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Rev. Denise Turpin will officiate and burial will be at New California Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Union County Cancer Society.
