Monica Marie Smith Barlow, 98, of Broadway, died peacefully Friday, July 20, 2012 at her home surrounded by her loving family. A born-again believer, she went home to be with her Lord and is now reunited with her husband of 65 years. As a homemaker, her life’s focus was being attentive to her family. As a pastor’s wife, she served her church and her family with decorum, respect, faithfulness and upright principles. She was lovingly known for her unintentional humor, funny stories and witty anecdotes. She will be especially remembered for her quiet demeanor, keen memory and a faith that was slightly stronger than her own will. A longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church, she served as church organist for many years and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles and was an accomplished seamstress. She graduated in 1932 from Rensselaer High School in Rensselaer, Indiana and attended classes at Moody Bible Institute from 1942 to 1945. She happily awaited the arrival of one great grandchild and two great-great grandchildren on the way. She was born May 30, 1914 in Oconto, Wisconsin to the late H. Fred and Emma Bouchier Smith and was also predeceased by her husband, Rev. Gerald Barlow, whom she married July 1933; and her sister, Lucille DuBois. She is survived by her children, Beverle Jean (Dean) Shumaker of Ft. Wayne, IN, Sharon (Richard) Craig of Ft. Wayne, IN, Gary (Cheryl Knight) Barlow of Phoenix, AZ, Phillip (Margaret) Barlow of Prospect, Ruth Ann (Wayne) Hamilton of Raymond and Stephen Barlow of Mesquite, TX; 11 grandchildren. Deana Davis, Robert Shumaker, Kristi (Tim) Norris, Rochelle (Greg) Milentis, Michelle (Tim) Tipsword, Bryan (Maria) Barlow, Elizabeth (Jesse) Mosser, Bethany (Billy) Hill, Matthew (Cory) Hamilton, Rachel (Nick) Withrow and Timothy (Bianna) Hamilton; Great grandchildren Angela, Danielle, Beau, Luke, Chelsie, Noah, Alexis, Isaiah, Jonah, Mackenzie, Zachary, Kaitlyn, Chase, Landon, Addyson, Carson, Annalise, Hailee, Hannah, Haezel, Leila, Aiden and Mason; and nieces and nephews and other relatives and good friends. The family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Underwood Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Broadway Cemetery. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held following the burial at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 17376 St. Rt. 347. Pastor Matt Zurowski and Phillip Barlow will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the church and Loving Care Hospice. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.underwoodfuneralhome.com.

Monica was an amazing woman and roll model. I always remember the beatiful way she dressed every Sunday at church. I could only hope that I could be half the woman that she was. So kind and loving. I will never forget her sweet loving caring ways.
Hope you can find peace in that fact that she is Gods Child and has returned to her home and is with her dearly beloved. Prayers go to everyone in the family.
Ruth Ann and family….so sorry for the loss of your mother !!

Barlow clan:
We’ve heard about the homegloing of Mrs. Barlow. We remember her as a gracious lady to the core, supportive of the young Pastor Riedy:), frank when she needed to be, and a great mate to Pastor Barlow. I spent many hours in her living room, talking to her and Gerald. She fought the fight, finished the course, kept the faith. God bless you all.

So sorry for your loss. May you have comfort and peace knowing that your Mom is healed and in heaven with your Dad, watching over all of her beautiful children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Litsa and I send our love and prayers to all the family. We will remember with fondness your mother and her kindness, thoughtfulness, and faith. She was a remarkable woman and wrote us notes now and then. It was remarkable how she often remembered details about our family that I didn’t even know she knew.
Dear Ruth Ann & Stephen:
I am so sorry to see that your mother passed away. She was always so sweet and kind – always remembered me when we’d meet at the grocery or somewhere. She is home with your dad and with Jesus and at peace. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with you all during this time.

Dear Ruth Ann:
We were greatly saddened to hear of Mona’s passing and regret the loss you and your family must be feeling at this time. We remember with great fondness and many smiles the times we shared with her and the many wonderful stories Lucille shared as well.
May you find peace and comfort in the knowledge that Mona was greatly loved and admired and know that our warmest thoughts and deepest sympathies are with you.
With much fondness,
Pat and Melissa Biddinger
Daughter and Granddaughter of Lucille P. DuBois
My mother Lucille always referred to Mona as her pretty sister. I have great memories of the family visits and how happy and positive she was. She raised a wonderful family who will have great stores to pass on to their children.
We will miss hearing of her trips across the country.
To all my cousins,
I am sorry to have just learned of Aunt Mona’s death — I am in Viet Nam at this time and word has just reached me. Though it has been many years since I saw Aunt Mona I will always remember her calm and sweet nature and kindness to our family. Brother Marvin brought wonderful stories of his visit with her a year or so ago and I only regret that I did not make the trip to see her myself. Much love and peace to all of you in this time of sorrow.
