Bernice Baker

Bernice Elizabeth Scheiderer Baker, 102, a lifelong resident of Union County, died Monday, July 9, 2012 at Carriage Court. A homemaker, she was a former associate of the Marysville Journal Tribune, Krogers, Shaw Photo Studio and Madge’s Dress Shop. Following her husband’s death in 1981, she lived by herself for 27 years in her West Seventh Street home. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years and belonged to Trinity Lutheran women. She was also a member of the Seniors Mother Study Club and Kings Daughters. A music aficionado, she played the piano, organ and clarinet, in addition to teaching piano for Jenny Sherwoods School of Music after graduating from high school in 1928. She was raised on the family farm just outside of Marysville at the east end of Watkins Road. It still exists today, though the farm is now divided by the U.S. Route 33 bypass. As a child, she walked to Trinity Lutheran School and Marysville High School. She enjoyed sewing and knitting and made most of her own clothing. Throughout the years, she loved flower gardening. Her front porch became her “garden” when she wasn’t able to tend to the earth. A member of a family with longevity, her grandmother also lived to the age of 102. She was born April 14, 1910 in Marysville to the late John K. and Lilly Kasper Scheiderer and was also predeceased in 1981 by her husband, Louis H. Baker, whom she married in 1934; two sisters, Esther DeWitt and Ernestine “Teenie” Wolford; a brother, Kenneth Scheiderer; her brothers-in-law, Jim “Fat” DeWitt, John Baker and Rev. Ed Goedeking; and her sisters-in-law, Doris Scheiderer, Rose Baker and Mary Goedeking. She is survived by two sons, Robert (Linda) Baker of Marysville and Donald (Barbara) Baker of North Carolina; four grandchildren, Betsy (Jim) Wimmers, Kelly (Mike) Kralik, Neil (Carla) Baker and Michelle Baker; nine great grandchildren, Cory (Kelli) James, Drew (Chelsey) James, Whitney Wimmers, Molly Wimmers, Gabe Kralik, Tate Kralik, Eli Baker, Audrey Baker and Keely Baker; a brother Dana Scheiderer of Marysville; her brothers-in-law, Richard (Margaret) Baker of Marysville and Todd Wolford of Marysville; her sister-in-law, Carol Scheiderer of Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Underwood Funeral Home where the family will receive friends beginning at 5 p.m. Rev. Barry Scott will officiate and interment will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Oakdale Cemetery. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church memorial fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
